From the Chicago Sun Times: "Preaching commitment to dreams, Bryant scores big with local players December 21, 2007 BY STEVE TUCKER stucker@suntimes.com The lesson that Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant related to local high school basketball players was that when you have a purpose and a dream, you should go for it. Bryant appeared Monday night at the Nike Team Huddle at Tim Grover's magnificent new Attack Athletics on the West Side. Varsity boys teams from Farragut, Marshall, Oak Park, Von Steuben and Young attended the event, which also featured Scoop Jackson of ESPN and author and motivational speaker Kevin Carroll, who gave each athlete a copy of his book Rules of the Red Rubber Ball... It's all on the wrist Carroll told the gathering how he was put on a bus when he was 6 and sent to his grandparents, 200 miles away. "I learned to dream at an early age," he said. "If you don't have a dream, why get up every morning?" Carroll, who created the wristbands with the word "dream" for Nike, distributed colorless bands to everyone in attendance and told the players what the letters stood for: D for dedication, R for responsibility, E for education, A for attitude and M for motivation."
