I love that the libertarian corporate apologists always link to the Reason magazine to cover their corporate overlord's (Occidental Petroleum) lies. Yes, the School Board bought the land for $1, and as Lois stated in this, the state & feds were not honest in the level of contamination readings.
But, Hooker NEVER:
-Fought the School Board in the Courts.
-Admit that other sites would leak due to ground water & water table issues.
-Admit that the metal drums would eventually leak.

Recently a good wife and loving mother of 2 and my youngest sister died of cancer that invaded her entire body, no doubt tied to the chemicals. People are still and always will be affected by this tragedy. I moved away from that area in 1984 . Glad I did. Sad. RIP sis. I miss you.

Lois Gibbs did a lot, however, the School Board covered up the fact that they and the city where the first to compromise the containment of the Canal by Hooker Chemical CO. The City punctured it with sewer and storm drain construction and a highway to the southern end where the most chemical was contained!! Hooker TOLD the school board that it could not be disturbed. Lois Gibbs with all of her good intensions mainly blames Hooker Chem Co. - WRONG.
What happened to the people at Love Canal was a criminal act on behalf of the government and a terrible tragedy on behalf of the families.

Wow. Just Wow. So sad but it's so good to have people like Lois who are not afraid to stand up for what is right.
