I thought tool assisted games runs were when the game was played at very low speeds for more reaction time.

It's that, but you can even save the game state in any time and load it back when you fail.

And some emulator save the whole input file so you can replay the run in real time like you see in this video

This is a TAS (tool assisted speedrun ) made with the emulator, so the player can freeze the game and save the race anytime, play again from to point he wants ( until he gets the mushroom on a box for example)
