Why am I sharing this?

The 6 major issues tackled in this presentation were discussed during the Young Moro Professionals Network roundtable in Zamboanga City and dozens of other dialogues among Young Moros and other stakeholders national and local. AIM Bridging leadership concepts such as multi-stakeholder approach, systems thinking, force field analysis was used to see the relationships among the major issues.

After the forum in the morning of Feb. 6 in AIM, in the the afternoon, I was lucky to meet Prof. Galtung, a renowned international expert in conflict mediation and resolution with 50 years of experience. During the forum organized by KAS (pls. see link below)I mentioned during the open forum the 6 dimensions of the Mindanao conflict in brief and forwarded a question on whether it is the current program of the government on having DDR without a political agreement will work considering that the present government thrust is DDR coupled with development.

His response was that, "there is no empirical data that DDR worked before a political peace agreement and that even in Germany DDR didn't work." He agreed that the multi-dimensional analysis of the mindanao conflict is a good paradigm. He urged for more creativity and change of paradigm.

Thus, this youtube video is for the purpose of changing paradigms for those who still view the Mindanao conflict as one cause, example poverty, equals conflict. Sadly, it is much more complex. I admit that I still have much to learn and I am continuously learning. However, I would rather share this now so that others of my age and those younger than me could "leap frog" 15 years of asking the question. "Why is there so much conflict? Is there hope? What can we do about it?"

I was lucky to have a positive feedback on the principles espoused on my presentation which are:
1. There are 6 major dimensions to the Moro conflict
2. That addressing the political problem as regards the MILF / MNLF will improve the other five dimensions (hence, we must look for alternative ways on resolving ancestral domain)
3. The purely Disarmament and Development model of the government must be reassessed and modified to fit multidimensional realities
4. We should not think that the MILF and the GRP should be the only ones who must do all the work for peace. Almost all of us belong to a critical sector that must improve their dimension.
5. Multi-stakeholder collaboration is important if we must move forward.

I was lucky to have been the provincial administrator of Sulu where I learned much about what is going on in the communities. On a weekly basis we were doing development work, humanitarian work, human rights work, inter-religious work, governance work, media work and justice sytem work. As provincial member of the center for humanitarian dialogue in Sulu, we monitored conflicts daily and I also got very distinct insights on drivers of conflict. Those concrete experiences were impossible to be learned in school. However, I was also lucky to be exposed to academic peace concept models by the AIM and Bradford University that taught me to think in terms of systems loops that inter relates multidimensional problems. Furthermore, I was lucky to have the clan conflict analysis training in Thailand, USIP conflict management trainings, dialogues with Harvard peace author Mark Gerzon in Mt. Kilimanjaro among others. These helped me put the various pieces together as a model.

As a young moro professional, I dare to present this on youtube for access by the youth and policy makers, so that they do not have to spend decades deciphering the systemic problems. I admit that it is impossible to talk about the longest conflict in the world within 10 minutes.

Yet, to change a paradigm on how a policy maker views the world can totally change the course of their program. Unfortunately, I think many of our policy makers still view the world as flat and stand by it as a matter of principle since it is superiors orders. However, our positions and mandate disappear in due time and so will our life. Our legacy to the next generations must be our ultimate concern. More than projects, I think policy intervention is a potent tool that can change the thrust of those in power to a more constructive and effective direction.

Pls. forward this to policy makers you know. Who knows, a small change in perception by a person wielding tremendous influence can make miracles happen.

Insha Allah, we pray for a miracle that peace will soon come to the lands of Mindanao

  • the solution for peace in mindanao is very simple make a law prohibited the used of islamic name in the country...

  • I THINK THE BEST SOLUTION FOR PEACE IN MINDANAO IS TO CHANGE THE ESTABLISHED GOVERMENT OF THE PHILIPPINES INSTEAD OF REPUBLIC DEMOCRATIC WHY WE DONT CHANGE IT FEDERAL FORM OF GOVERMENT ??? ATLEAST NOW MUSLIM CAN ALSO BE A PRESIDENT OF THEIR OWNSTATE? WHICH IS MINDANAO ? THEN LET THE VISAYAS AND LUZON BECOME A CHRISTIAN STATES AND ALL OF OUR 3 STATES WILL BE UNITED UNDER FEDERAL COUNTRY?? COME ON CHRISTIANS LETS BE PAIR ENOUGH FOR LIKEUS BANGSA MORO COZ ARMM IS ENOUGH FOR US!!

  • We want peace but!!! as one whole Country no peace divide the country. you people need to clear up the things you want first what is self determination to u?? and do acknowledge that you are Filipinos and do you give up your push for Independence? and live under our flag with your flag as a symbol of your so called nation? and last are you going to when time comes to fight for this country no matter who and what our enemy is? if you can't answer my question sir this nothing but a dream

  • kahit anong gawin ng goberno sa kanila , kahit ibigay pa sa kanila ang gusto nila na MOA-AD, gyera pa rin ang resulta kultura na nila yan.parang hindi sila mabuhay na walang armas . ang problema talaga nila yung pagka moro attitude , mostly tamad , ang lawak ng lupa naka tiwangwang lang hindi ginamit, hindi ako anti moro, i want for them to challenge,

  • Prime minister DON LOONG

    United state of Bangsamoro

  • 1-Read the ROOTCAUSE and study/understand that.

2-The MOA-AD can address that INJUSTICES and CORRECT-but Mar Roxas & the OLIGARCHS w/interest in mindanao n sulu shotdown PEACE oppurtunity and scare ppl to say ITS UNCONSTITUTIONAL.

3-MOA-AD was a TWO SYSTEM- ONE COUNTRY arrangement, like Hongkong in relation to China, among others.

4-We can live in the 2-system PEACEFULLY or WAR for generations? dont force them to accept ONE COUNTRY-ONE SYSTEM.

5-Help spread thispeace message, love TRUTH
