  • I've found that Remington 12ga low recoil 00 buck patterns a very tight 9" with the full choke on my gun. I realize the ME at 50 yard with shot is going to much reduced due to the very low BC of shot. Any opinion on what a maxium effective range might be for such a load and tight pattern? It would be interesting top see balistic gelatin tests to confirm at least 12" of penetration at extended shotgun ranges.

  • @InTheSticks0001 Try pattern testing Federal FliteControl buck with a cyl/imp choke. Patterning out of darn near everything I've seen allows for all pellets on an IDPA silhouette out to about 40 yards. I've not seen any gel tests at that range, but at that point, penetration numbers are secondary to # of wound tracks.

  • Thank you for this video. These factors are not widely understood by most shooters. Good job! I would like to suggest however, that when mounting the gun: bring the gun to your line of sight first, then to the shoulder. The face is alongside the stock, not lying on the comb of the stock.

  • @oldeafcoot Sorry I missed this. I'd refer you to my response to the same theme in the comments section of my "African Carry" video.

  • great video. I was looking for someone do describe how it felt to shoot a short LOP stock shotgun and you demonstrated it perfectly. one thing I'm glad you mentioned was wrapping or not wrapping your thumb. I was toying around with my mossberg 500 and was trying to figure if I would hit myself in the nose with the 12" LOP stock but you covered that as well. thanks for the video.

  • @EfEmDee "... penetration numbers are secondary to # of wound tracks." As a reloader for rifle familur with rifle ballistics, that is reassuring info. Unfortunately the new gun is a good'ol Ithaca with a full choke barrel. Perhaps the Federal FliteControl buck would have more punch that a low recoil load and much wider pattern, perhaps it would be a well balanced load. Interesting about the Hogue stocks, the price is right and the orignal wood wood be preserved. Nutter good idea. Thanks.

  • ...and for the record, my 870 does double-duty as a duck hunting gun. It wears the Hogue Youth stock and kills ducks just fine (as long as I remember to follow through).

  • The shotgun I borrowed for the demonstration was cut to the preference of a 6'2" man. I'm 5'10" and think it's fine. My wife (a shooter) is 5'7", and found the LOP just fine. We have a training partner who is 6'4", and he runs a 11.5" stock on his 590. We all live in Wisconsin, and are quite familiar with the issue of shooting while wearing heavy clothing. Most recoil pads can be ground down to fit, but I think the Hogue Youth stock is very worth the $50 not to have to mess with that.

  • @EfEmDee Thank you. That was very helpful. As I live in the cold NW wehere clothing is heavy and the shotgun will be primarily for SD then birds, and lastly, because of my shorter stature and affinity for other rifles with a 12" LOP, 12" is not a so risky and perhaps as good as it might get for myself. And then it can still taken a bit shorter. There other important part of the equation is finding a recoil pad that can be fitted to the new butt end diamentions.

  • @InTheSticks0001 No rule of thumb, but somewhere between 11.5" and 13" should work. HK stocks, ComBlock AK stocks, "Sully" stocks for the AR15, collapsible stocks for the AR set at 1 notch from closed, and the Hogue youth stock all measure right around 12" from the trigger to the end of the buttstock (including recoil pad if any).

The cut down stock shown in the video measured 12.5"

  • I getting ready to cut down a stock as it clearly to long for myself even at 14". I like short, but how short would be ideal for a shotgun. I'm inclined to playing it safe and go for 13" Any rule of thumb ?
