http://www.BestRussianRiverWineries.com - Paul Sloan from Small Vines Wines and Viticulture explains why it is essential to install bird netting as the grapes are going through veraison.

Veraison is when red grapes start turning color and beginning to develop sugars and some sweetness. Birds start getting interested in the grapes at this time of year, so to ward off any damage or potential bacteria that birds may convey, Paul and his crew install the netting early.

The netting is a virtual tent that allows the vineyard crew to get underneath the netting and do the work such as dropping fruit and thinning the vines.
