If batsia was still in power cuba would be in open revolt due to the special period, but under castros rule he kept things together as best as possible. No politician in the world could get through the Special Period unscathed and Castro led his country through the dissolution of the Soviet Union and transitioned its dependency from Soviet interests to its closer allies in South America.

I encourage you to learn about Joanny Sanchez, Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet, Antunez, Zapata, Pedro Luis Boitel and hundreds of other peaceful Cuban dissidents who have given their lives or currently struggle to bring about a democratic change to an entrenched totalitarian regime in place for over half a century. The U.S. Embargo is nothing but an excuse for the Castro regime to continue to blame its failures on the U.S.
