Benito, a Hyacinth Macaw and his roommate, Killer, a Green Wing Macaw preening each other at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh. Also rooming with them are two black parrots.
Hyacinth and Green Wing Macaws are the first and second, respectively, largest species of Macaw in the world. Green Wing Macaws are native to northern and central South America while Hyacinths are found only in particular areas of Brazil, eastern Bolivia and a small portion of Paraguay. Both are endangered due to habitat loss. Of the two Green Wings are the more even tempered, layed back of the two species of bird.
Hyacinth and Green Wing Macaws possess, like their size the first and second strongest beaks of any parrot. Hyacinths have been known to bend metal bars and Green Wing Macaws can easily snap a broomstick in half. This natural ability exists as in the wild they feed on the hardest shelled nuts of any bird in the wild; their favorite foods being Brazil, Macadamian and Pine nuts.
