Usually, Us railfans don't really look at railfanning as being emotional or having an moving effect on you. Well this shot as well as this day that I shot trains from this location was probably the hardest to do. On January 5, 2009, NS 192 collided head on with Local P22 on the very same Spur seen in the video. The derailment caused a tank car filled with Chlorine Gas to rupture and spread across the area. The Gas leak killed a few residents as well as the Engineer onboard NS 192, Chris Seeling. So this video is dedicated to those, Our Fellow Railroad Brothers and Sisters, who have lost their lives doing what they do best!

Here's NS 156 passing the derailment site with NS 6554 (SD60) and NS 5419 (SD50). Engineer Steve gives me a nice horn salute and wave while passing my camera.

  • Dude, I remember hearing @ that crash and the ensuing chlorine outburst that it caused. I heard it was some idiot engineer's fault who forgot to hit the rail switcher or something causing the two trains to be on the same track.

  • Yea, but poor judgement was really to blame on the WHOLE crew of P22. I'm not trying to bash them because they've really been paying the ulitmate price.

  • The crew didn't double check the switch and left it lined to the siding instead of back to the Main.

  • I was involved in that train wreck. I was trapped in my car under a tree a ground zero for approximately three hours. That was a horrible night.

  • @DaCaptain924 It Was Chlorine.Very Heavy Smoke That Reptured 2:40 I The Morning

  • It Was January 6TH

  • I use to go to the middle school across the street from the wreck. My ex girlfriends dad worked at the plant when it happend. He got killed as well. God bless the souls that were involved.

  • Norfolk Southern handed out eyecharts and eyeglasses to a train crew a month prior to this accident for running through a switch in dark territory. I wonder if they gave the dead members of the crew their eyecharts and eyeglasses posthumously?

Check out rollinghomeless com for more details on Norfolk Southern and its system of corruption.

  • @DaCaptain924

It was the idiot conductor, not idiot engineer, but you got it pretty close.

  • I really wouldn't recommend that. That date is a bit too touchy for the residents of Graniteville. Plus, to me thats not really showing respect to Chris.

I really wouldn't even try to do that.

  • We really need to get a railfan out there on January 6th when 192 comes through to get a video for the 5 year anniversary.

  • Sad day of rememberance, though, I agree.

  • No, according to the NTSB report, all passed the drug alcohol test. One took allergy medicene and another one took vitamins for his joints. Both had no problems with that in their system while working.

Basically, the P22's crew left the switch open due to the Brakeman and Conductor (engineer was extra board and went on duty at 8:46 while the others were on duty at 7) going on the law and hurried to finish before they went on the law. The NTSB report has everything, good report to read.
