As long as fuel goes in, energy comes out. The prices of fuel aren't really relevant, as the costs of the fuel are passed on to the consumer.

If we fail to put a serious tax on carbon (or a properly priced cap and trade bill) that accurately reflects the true cost to us and the planet of using fossil fuels--we WILL end up like this. That's because we won't have made the transition to renewables in a post-peak oil world. Oh--except for freezing in bed, that is. With the collapse of the temperate zone, most of the US will be looking at Florida weather most of the year--except that Florida will be under water.
