A Moment Revealed, excerpts from I. "Fantasy" & II. "Within/Without" by Corey Keating
2nd Annual Melos New Music Festival, San Francisco - August 19, 2011

Program notes:
The title of this piece refers to my personal fascination with the idea that music has the potential to magnify some aspect or element of its creator -- at times, something extremely vague and minute in its conception -- in such a way that the resulting product becomes much more substantial and diverse than its initial impetus.

Mvt. I (Fantasy) -- An improvisatory and free prelude, the opening theme, played by the piano, becomes the primary material featured throughout the rest of the movement, with brief excursions to alternating sections. A true fantasy in the musical sense, this theme reappears throughout the movement in various tonal centers and is subjected to several changes in character -- from the meandering beginning, to a more pastoral interlude, in addition to its final, forceful assertion of character.

Mvt. II (Within/Without) -- More meditative and vague, this movement incorporates freely changing meters (2/4, 7/16, 6/8, 9/16) in an attempt to create music that is less rooted in a predictable sense of time. Despite the constantly-shifting feeling of pulse, I attempted to create music that was somewhat atmospheric in texture, yet contained a sense of logical and continuous flow. The different sections within this movement attempt to capture some element of the inner world of their creation, while simultaneously creating an external atmosphere for the music's ultimate manifestation.

Mvt. III (Made Manifest) -- The final movement of this work combines the characters of the previous two movements, taking with it ideas from each of these separate domains. Re-emerging from the calm, inner world of creation, the music now attempts to make some sense of the the elements and phenomena that have been discovered, and to translate them into something tangible and meaningful. There is, however, one caveat: at some indistinguishable point, the music is no longer appears to be merely an emblematic aspect of its creator. Rather, it takes on a life of its own, seemingly outside the realm of its conception, dictating its own evolutionary path and revealing its unique character as a newly-formed and complete entity.

Corey Keating is currently pursuing a Master's degree in music composition at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, studying with Dr. Mikel Kuehn and teaching aural skills/theory. He recently completed his degree in music composition at San José State University in California where he studied with Dr. Pablo Furman. In addition to composing, Corey held the position of Assistant Editor at the Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies, where he wrote and published articles for the internationally-acclaimed Beethoven Journal.

In Fall of 2008, his choral piece Hidden is the Sky was selected for premiere at the annual Society of Composers, Inc. festival. It was subsequently performed in April of 2009, by the San Jose State Concert Choir, under the direction of Clem Cano. 2010 saw two major premieres of his works - Vjerskih Rituala for string quartet, performed at the South Bay Composers' Collective inaugural concert in May, and the subsequent premiere of his horn sonata The Point at Which Light Shines Through in Chicago by horn player Mike Walker and pianist Qing Jiang. His quartet A Moment Revealed was recently premiered at the second annual Melos Music concert in San Francisco, with an additional performance in the BGSU Composer's Forum series.
