Quen Cultra grew up in landlocked Onarga, Illinois. But his childhood was filled with dreams of sailing around the world. Prairie Fire follows Cultra on his journey around the world in a plywood and fiberglass boat that he built on his family's farm before he even learned to sail. Cultra relives his three years traveling around the globe, navigating by the sun and stars with a sextant, and meeting people who had never seen a Westerner before.
Cultra went on to write a book about his globe spanning voyage called "Queequeg's Odyssey: A High Seas Adventure."
PRODUCER'S NOTE:
Sadly, Quen Cultra was lost at sea on a later sailing trip on Jan. 20, 2009. While on a follow-up, two-year circumnavigation of the globe, Cultra and his two sailing companions were struck by a tropical storm 200 miles east of Madagascar. Facing rough seas and 40-foot waves, Cultra and his friend, Joe Strykowski, were both lost at sea. Their bodies were never recovered. R.I.P.
