Hugo Chavez has been hugely popular in Venezuela in the past decade, but his performance on the economy and crime rate has been questioned.

Despite being a major oil exporter, the country's economy has been facing spiralling inflation.

However, what has made him win the successive elections since he came to power in 1998?

Francisco Dominguez, head of the Centre of Brazil and Latin American Studies at Middlesex University in London tells Al Jazeera why Chavez is at the centre of Venezuelan politics.
