In 1956 Great Britain and France, along with Israel, went to war with Egypt after Egypt's then Government controlled by the then President Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal. The Prime Minister of Great Britain, Sir Anthony Eden, forced Nasser to retreat from Suez, but war was inevitable between us.

  • Does anyone know if the full version of that speach in the beginning is availible on YouTube? Tried, but failed, to find it. Cheers.

  • The speech was off a Pathe newsreel. If you like, I can place the whole speech on Youtube by the weekend.

  • i dont feel sprry for eden, his actions were disgusting, nasser wasnt a pleasant ruler, but the confrontation was born out of british invovlment in the middle east, so in otherwords we got our just deserts(ish)

  • The actions of Sir Eden split the country in half. Nevertheless, for argument sake, if you became Prime Minister in 1955 and you were confronted with Nasser and his plans to nationalise the Suez (Of which gave Great Britain much capital and maintained the banks) and your fellow ministers believed that we need to kick back and save this - would you have done the same as Sir Eden?

  • great video, did you make it yourself?

I always feel sorry for Eden with regards to Suez.

    What music is this?

  • Yes, thanks. I used old Pathe news clips from a DVD and put it together with a song. The song was from a BBC television program during the 1960s; sadly I cannot remember what it was called. I also feel sympathy for Eden, if it was not for the Suez he would have remained one of our great post-war Prime ministers.

  • I adore Eden ..Blair's forernner

  • I like that this kind of footage is around and available for everyone to see, and make their own judgements.

  • Eden was right.

  • No word of lie. I don't no how but he is in relation to my family somehow back in the day.

This video is a bit old, but could you upload the full, unedited speech? It'd be nice for my history project...

  • @TheWilliamcale if imperialism is not all evil

then part of it is evil

and ths part is to takre and exploit the advantage of the resources of other nations

and make some just number 2 in their contries and for sure the science and technology ou claim third world to benefit from them are nothing more than crumbs

not real technology transfer and all the universities in third word are due to national effort not imperialism at all and long live egyptien president nasser

  • What was the aftermath of all this nonsense?

  • @LethalPenguin92 Completly agree. As long as we'll help them illegally invade a country for oil they don't care if we are loosing our canal. Our oldest ally... Blair was so quick to forget Suez.
