Barwick-in-Elmet, Yorkshire, Spring Bank Holiday Monday 2008. Every third year on Easter Monday, the village maypole which is almost 90 feet high with a fox weather-vane on top, and towers above the village, is taken down for repainting. On Spring Bank Holiday Monday it is re-installed, until recently by 200 men, but latterly with the help of a crane. Four specially prepared garlands with bells and ribbons are hung half way. Finally a brave volunteer climbs the pole to the top. The day is a celebration including a procession, music, crowning of the Maypole Queen and maypole dancing.
