Doc Watson - 1991 - Black Mountain Rag. I've included Doc's introduction and explanation of his background with this particular tune. I've always loved the interesting anecdote that Doc developed...

Does anyone know the guitar width at the nut on Doc's guitar? 1 3/4? 1 7/8? Looks wider than the convential dred neck.

Saw Doc perform last night. Still picking a mighty fine guitar at age 86!

Can someone please tell me what genre this is? I really really like this music and want to play more music like this if anyone has a direction they can point me in (songs, artists, albums) I respectfully ask them for their guidance.

I reckon you'd be right in calling it Bluegrass, although in fairness, too many of us 'shoehorn' music into categories in order to classify it.

The music doesn't care.

Great isn't it? Considering Doc is blind, it blows me away.

@dannyoak This is bluegrass, dannyoak. Doc Watson is one of the best. Bill Monroe is "the father of modern bluegrass." Alison Krauss and Union Station are also good. Tony Rice, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, J.D. Crowe...there's tons of bluegrass artists.

Just checked out the Brian Setzer version...pretty cool...electric is too sloppy of an instrument to bring a FP tune out properly....but, cool none the less:) Check out the version off the first Circle record. I think it's the best version and best Doc Tone! IMHO

Jack is SO underrated... he comes up with some of the BEST lines out there! And yes, Brian Sutton is one of ( if not THE) most technically sound players EVER. But people, technique is only ONE element....Brian probably has the strongest, cleanest FP tone out there...his lines sound just like what you'd expect from a TOP BG player....But Jacks lines....are SO interesting...and you never quite know what's coming next:) IMHO
