I've always loved the interesting anecdote that Doc developed his now legendary flatpicking style while playing a Les Paul (electric solid body guitar) while he was playing in a Rockabilly band in the 1950's. Additionally, I've heard that he actually didn't even own an acoustic guitar at that time.
It's interesting that this style has since become associated with, nearly exclusively, acoustic guitars, particularly Martin dreadnoughts.
I've always wondered what kind of reception a picker would get at the National Flatpicking Contest in Winfield Kansas if he were to show up to compete with a Les Paul in hand!

Can someone please tell me what genre this is? I really really like this music and want to play more music like this if anyone has a direction they can point me in (songs, artists, albums) I respectfully ask them for their guidance.
@dannyoak This is bluegrass, dannyoak. Doc Watson is one of the best. Bill Monroe is "the father of modern bluegrass." Alison Krauss and Union Station are also good. Tony Rice, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, J.D. Crowe...there's tons of bluegrass artists.
AMAZING picking!!! I think i just found, or should i say ,gained a new respect for this great music. ive always liked it when i heard it, but after sittin here for 2 hrs WATCHING
Just checked out the Brian Setzer version...pretty cool...electric is too sloppy of an instrument to bring a FP tune out properly....but, cool none the less:) Check out the version off the first Circle record. I think it's the best version and best Doc Tone! IMHO
Jack is SO underrated... he comes up with some of the BEST lines out there! And yes, Brian Sutton is one of ( if not THE) most technically sound players EVER. But people, technique is only ONE element....Brian probably has the strongest, cleanest FP tone out there...his lines sound just like what you'd expect from a TOP BG player....But Jacks lines....are SO interesting...and you never quite know what's coming next:) IMHO

The music doesn't care.
Great isn't it? Considering Doc is blind, it blows me away.
