Helen Keller's loss of vision and hearing in infancy made comprehension of the outside world next to impossible—or so it seemed. When teacher Anne Sullivan agreed to work with Keller, that world opened up, especially when Keller comprehended the function and purpose of language. Keller and Sullivan appear in this newsreel footage from 1928, in which Sullivan explains and then demonstrates the methodology used to teach Keller language, most elements of which are still used worldwide with students who are deaf-blind. This full-length version is brought to you by the Described and Captioned Media Program (www.dcmp.org) with the permission of the copyright holder, the University of South Carolina Newsreel Library (www.sc.edu/library/newsfilm/). It has been described for the blind and captioned for the deaf. To learn more about description and captioning, visit the following websites: www.dcmp.org/description and www.dcmp.org/captions.

  • i had never seen what Helen Keller looked like, always thought it was an interesting story, youtube comes thru again

  • Wow! All i can say is Wow! :)

  • Amazing!

  • @AngieLynn1981 Yes a mistery maybe.I always thought it was a mistery if Helen became blind and deaf and ANn joined her and had been blind herself.Maybe despite the tragedy,God used Helen for a big aventure and to show someting the world,to show the world that LOVE IS JUST ENOUGH and seeing is seeing with your heart. It is sure that she had to be very frustrated as a little girl, and her parents desperate but now i am sure her parents know and Helen herself too.SHe just was an angel sent on earth.

  • God bless Helen and Ann; both of these women have inspired me to overcome my obstacles and keep moving forward. God bless their souls. :)

  • Yes its true! Many people now think that deaf with mute and blind are dumb. Feel like discrimination. Now u see many deaf with blind can speak, walks independence around home and out, work any position, etc... I am so proud of Annie Sullivan who suffered hard work for Hellen Keller. Then Hellen improved and became famous. I am so proud of deaf, hard of hearing and deaf/blind who still brave!!!! God blessed Hellen Keller a lot! :)

  • The people who say that God has nothing to do with this...oh dear...they have so much to learn. Annie Sullivan and Helen Keller were amazing individuals. But God was doing His work through them. He does have EVERYTHING to do with this. And it is simply a miracle.
