Youssou Ndour could never be described as melancholic, now or in the past, but I take your point.
What made him a world star is his electric performances on many albums over 20 years.
However, the production style of this new album is simply dull and boring, and Youssou has never been great at singing in English because his huge passion is missing.
There are far better producers than Tyrone Downie, and Youssou did not choose him - the record company did.
@throbule I agree with you about the original version in Wolof.West African griot-like singers such as Salif Keita,Ismael Lo,Baba Maal and Alpha Blondy are capable of touching the hearts of people from all cultures and backgrounds through melodious melancholic West African sounds. If Youssou wanted to maintain that,he would have worked with Bocana Maiga.Like Alpha & Tiken Jah Fakoly,he chose Tyrone Downie because he wanted Jamaican vibes. The results cannot be identical.I like this version too.
Youssou N'Dour vous chantez pour la liberté que beaucoup de peuples du monde sont en train de chercher. Merci, vous etes grand!

Sorry to Youssou's fans (of which I am one) but this safe and predictable production does not a good album make.
Listen to the original of this song in Wolof with his own band and it will blow you away.
This is just an embarrassment and slightly sad.

This is fantastic, as a Jamaican who loves Senegal, i think this is the perfect album that brings together the two best countries in the world!
