Nice vintage tape recorder! I see these from time to time on E-Bay!

Lt. Gov. Maddox speaks first. His speaking ends with "Along comes Lt. Calley", followed by applause. After the applause, it is Gov. George Wallace (Alabama) speaking.

I never let him know that I was a former hippie who once demonstrated with my fellow students in 1968-1972. He would have buried me under the jail if he knew that. I miss him.

He felt a business owner had the right to choose his customers just as a homeowner could choose who came into his home. Too bad he so enjoyed attention and being in the limelight. This made him a lightening rod for controversy. As a lover of history, it was a thrill to chauffeur him to family & political events those last four years of his life.
That broadcast would have been around September 1969 when Calley was formally charged.

Thanks for posting this. It's a rich and altogether historical experience for someone born well after the Viet Nam era. I was listening to Randy Newman's song "Rednecks," which speaks of Mr. Maddox in terms different than you might expect, and I wanted to know more about this notorious figure. I could not have expected this. Really wild that you wound up with his reel-to-reel! I can't help but wonder whether it cost much.
