NXT concerto - part 4

"Singing in the rain" by Arthur Freed and Nacio Herbert Brown. Performed on a piano made entirely out of LEGO elements. The keys are binary coded with small 1x2 bricks that depresses 4 beams under the keyboards. The combination is detected by 4 light sensors and the NXT plays the corresponding note.

is it the way the light sensors are doubled up per key that give it the "hammond percussion" like attack sound?

The four sensors are working like a binary encoder. But sometimes the mechanical "bits" are not activated at the exact same time. Therefore some of the notes starts with the wrong frequency but after a few milliseconds it switches to the right one. "E" has the code 0101 but it will often start as 0001 - which is "C" - untill the key is fully depressed. That's a common problem with mechanical encoders: They are only right when the movement is completed. Halfway down the keys are unpredictable.

Jeg overvejede at lave de to ekstra tangenter der var muligt. Det kneb bare med pladsen, og desuden virkede en hel oktav som et rart afsluttet tal - måske fordi jeg er vant til at se på en afsluttet oktav i orglets pedaler.

Så forstod jeg det rigtigt :D C= 1000 C#= 0100 D= 1100 D#= 0010 E= 1010 F= 0110 F#= 1110 G= 0001 G#= 1001 A= 0101 Bb= 1101 B= 0011 c= 1011 0111 og 1111 bruger du ikke. Hvilket betyder at du kan lave to tangenter mere eller?

De fire bjælker nedenunder "tangenterne" bliver nedtrykket af et antal klodser under den enkelte tangent. Hver bjælke er forbundet til en lyssensor som registrerer om bjælken er trykket ned. Hvis bjælkerne nummereres 1-2-3-4 kan man udtrykke det således: - C = 1 - C# = 2 - D = 2+1 - D# = 3 - E = 3+1 - F = 3+2 - F# = 3+2+1 - G = 4 - G# = 4+1 - A = 4+2 - Bb = 4+2+1 - B = 4+3 - c = 4+3+1 - 4+3+2 og 4+3+2+1 bruges ikke
