Unità 01. Corso di Inglese. Dettato: Restaurants
RESTAURANTS. Most people think that food in Britain is terrible. They say that the British eat a lot of greasy, fried food, overcooked vegetables and not very much fruit. Are they right? Well partly, yes. In general the British are not very interested in what they eat. They eat to live; they don't live to eat. They want to eat quickly and they don't want to spend a lot of time preparing meals. At home they often eat food from tins or frozen food, or ready-prepared food from a fish and chip shop or a Chinese take-away restaurant. And once a meal is ready, it's eaten quickly and cleared away. When people eat out, there are many cheap places where they can eat quickly and not very well: fast food places where you can have a hamburger, chips and a milk-shake or cafés where you can have fish and chips, bacon and eggs, meat and vegetables, followed by a sweet and a big cup of watery milky coffee. There are also pubs where you can have something to eat, but people usually go there to drink beer
or other alcoholic drinks. Most cheap places, like cafés,
close at half past five in the afternoon. If you want to eat out
in the evening you can go to a restaurant. This is not very common because it is usually expensive. But Britain is a multi-cultural society so there are restaurants with food from all over the world: Chinese, Indian, Pakistani, Greek and,
of course, Italian. Nowadays many British people go on holiday abroad and they like the food they eat there, so habits are changing and people are cooking different things. Some children say that pizza is their favourite food.
Lasagne is very popular with adults!
