Steve Reich performing "Drumming"

Cologne, January 27, 2009: Steve Reich and Members of the ensemble Modern in the Hall of the Museum Ludwig performing "Drumming" .The participants are Rumi Ogawa and Rainer Römer (both members of the ensemble modern) and Wolfram Winkel (as a guest of the ensemble modern- Thanks for the info, Wolfgang!)

Lateron they would perform "Music for 18 Musicians" in the Philharmony located in the same building.

A very tough piece to play The most difficult parts are the sections when the phase relationships between the basic rhythms are fluctuating because you can't listen to what the other person is doing or you will automatically sync up with their rhythm--and you can't!!

Exactly! And i was (and still am) surprised,how much in this piece is NOT written out to the last Beat but is improvised and left to Interpretation to Interpretation to some considerable extent.

The lady in red is principal percussionist for ensemble modern. she is AMAZING.

@gurcrist The actually speed of the phases themselves can be at a little quicker or slower pace, which would give or take a few minutes off the total running time...
