Mein Doppelgänger

Tanks Art Centre, Cairns. Australia. Opening 23rd Oct 09 11 Nov

Alan GRIEVE Thomas GUICHARD Dominic JOHNS Alex MACIVER
Craig MIDDLETON Lionel PENEAU Sam TUPOU

Curated by Alex Maciver. An exhibition of new art works from various emerging international artists. Although these artists have been selected for their variety and expertise in different mediums, they all share an exciting background full of travel and collected cultural influences.

THE THEME

The word Doppelgänger is a German loanword and it derives from Doppel (double) and Ganger (goer). It is translated as the ghostly double of a living person, a sinister form of bilocation. In the vernacular, Doppelgänger has come to refer as in German, any double or look-a-like of a person. The word is also used to describe the sensation of having glimpsed oneself in peripheral vision, in a position where there is no chance that it could have been a reflection. They are generally regarded as harbringers of bad luck but this can be classed as folk lore. In some traditions, a Doppelgänger seen by a persons friends or relatives portends illness or danger, while seeing ones own doppelganger is an omen of death. Those who disconnect themselves from spiritual belief instantly connect the sighting of oneself to mental disorder namely schizophrenia; a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a mental disorder characterized by abnormalities in the perception or expression of reality. This exhibition studies the works and readings of Carl Gustav Jung.
