ledega) He's the reason for restrictor plates! A Talledega 202.398mph pole and the 1987 record setting lap of 212.809mph and up during the race. 1988 Champ!! @negtype13 No, Bobby Allison's flight through the fencing in 1987 - coming after six years of such near-disasters - was the reason for restrictor plates. I do not understand why people want to perpetuate the myth that Elliott is why NASCAR went to restrictor plates.

If you think of it though, out of Rudd, and the Bodine Brothers, only Geoff did better, but in the end, at least Elliott wasnt in as dire straits as either Bodine or Rudd was.
With some help, I think Ellott could of done quite well with his own team.
