they both think they are the dark prince. ironically, that excludes tony williams

McLaughlin always has the best drummers. Williams, Cobham, Chambers, Zakir Hussain, etc.

Bad Ass MoFo's right there...without a doubt!!
Wish they were all still alive. Tony and Jaco RIP!

I agree, Coltrane and Miles were on that level. But the question is who is out there now?
-
@rikibitta ...for me Mclaughlin plays in Second League - but sure a beatiful player.
ps: my favourite John's trio is with Trilok Gurtu & Dominique DiPiazza '89/93 years(Que Alegria LP) - after Trio of Doom obviously!!!

@triofdoom ya man I know this story! In my young days -full of Hendrix & Zappa, Davis and Coltrane(...)- we, me and my older musician friends, Talked a lot about difference between musical genius and monstre tecknik...
There are so many great virtuosos that can play Bach music perfectly, but only Segovia for guitar an Gould for piano are in the same league with Johann Sebastian(!) - the same of Jaco and Tony, Hendrix & Zappa or Davis & Coltrane, Mozart & Beethoven,Chopin & ...Bill Evans
-
@rikibitta at one point like 1971-1975 John Mclaughlin was considered the best guitarist on the planet, when he was Mahavishnu
-
@trabo71 If I were a drum, I would run away from Tony Williams.
SO outside......this type of playing just doesn't happen anymore. I don't think people have the balls to play like this now.
