The Lay of the Land is author Richard Ford's third novel about New Jersey realtor Frank Bascombe. Frank is dealing with prostate cancer, a marriage which has crumbled and the feeling he is trapped in what he thinks of as his Permanent Period. It is the fall of 2000 a time of dangling chads and uncounted ballots which seems so innocent now knowing that 9/11 is just a year ahead.
My favourite book of the year too

I love how humble he is in his interviews. Very real. He's not a writer for the title "writer," that's certain.

Independence Day is a classic. Ford is the best writer around.

I look forward to reading Lay of the Land, however, I have read Mr. Ford's 1995 Pulitzer-winning novel, Independence Day, and I heartily recommend this fine work to you. - rm
