Great to see Ashe win Wimbledon - and for him to whip the unsportsmanlike, arrogant, conceited and (pig)big-headed Connors. Ashe, who would have been a true elder statesman of the game had he lived longer.
Great game plan on Ashe part. Serving wide, given Connors no pace, & a great net game. Connors made tons of errors. I'm shocked that Connors made no adjustments. Can't believed that Connors was hitting 2 handed backhands when he was 2, or 3 feet from the net. WTF? Nobody in today's game does that! After this match, they played 2 more times, Connors winning both. I wonder if Ashe tried the same game plan of this one for those matches.
@zhrob1 I totally agree with you...100% junk. When I watched Connors play against other opponents, they would try to out pace him, hitting hard relentless shots, keeping the rallies long which Connors would feed on. They played Connors hard and fast, giving him ammunition to warm up that fierce backhand of his. Ashe was playing like it was a day in the park and proved that when given junk, Connors becomes average. I could not believe how many unforced errors Connors had in that match.
@P90X490104 Ashe is noted for his skill of reading his opponent. He knew Connors had one of the best backhand swings and your comment of Connors being off balance was just what Ashe planned so that that strong backhand would not be an advantage over himself (Ashe). I think Ashe says he played him junk! lol Well thought out junk, nevertheless!!
@zhrob1 I guess I will be the first. I was watching the Tennis Channel and they were showing the five of the greatest upsets in tennis history and Ashe defeating Connors was one of them. I remember watching this match in 75 and no one gave Ashe a chance. Ashe played a good game, keeping the ball low, no pace, plenty of chop shots and an awesome net game. See how many times Connors was off balanced in this match..The cool ice of Ashe prevailed over the fiery agression of Connors. Good match.
