Tinel's Sign for the Median Nerve is a special test used to diagnose Median Nerve injury at the wrist that is typically associated with carpal tunnel syndrome. A positive test will involve complaints of tingling and pain in the affected hand/wrist. The verbal description for the test was taken from Clinical Skills Documentation Guide for Athletic Training by Amato et al
For example, in a person with carpal tunnel syndrome where the median nerve is compressed at the wrist, Tinel's sign is often "positive" and causes tingling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers.
Tinel's sign is sometimes referred to as "distal tingling on percussion" or DTP

Tinel's sign: An examination test that is used by doctors to detect an irritated nerve. Tinel's sign is performed by lightly banging (percussing) over the nerve to elicit a sensation of tingling or "pins and needles" in the distribution of the nerve.

I really don't know why this test is necessary. In very early stages of carpal tunnel syndrome, you will feel a little tingling pain around the wrist area. Why does the doctor need to do this test?

Addtionally, you would have to tap with a little bit more force. However, as the two previous comments have stated, you need to be tapping more distally.

exactly I was wondering the same thing...it is supposed to be where his/her thumb is that is the Carpal Tunnel Region...where he/she was tapping was the anterior interosseus space.

For the record, Your not tapping the carpal tunnel - More the interosseus space between the radius and the ulna...
You should be tapping more where your left thumb is located...
