Wouter Weylandt * 27. September 1984 - † 9. Mai 2011 was a Belgian professional road bicycle racer for UCI ProTeam Quick Step and later for Leopard Trek.

Death:
In stage 3 of the 2011 Giro d'Italia, Weylandt crashed while descending the Passo del Bocco, near the town of Mezzanego, suffering a fatal injury. While he was looking over his shoulder at other riders, the left side of his bike struck a wall, sending him across the road where he then hit another object at high speed. It is reported that CPR was carried out for around 45 minutes by two different paramedic teams, the one following the race at first, and the emergency team afterwards, to no avail. He was given adrenaline and atropine but the injuries were reported as too severe. All the resuscitation attempts failed and the sportsman was declared dead at the scene due to a fractured skull. A later autopsy confirmed that the cyclist was "dead on the spot and did not suffer." Weylandt was wearing a helmet made by Bontrager, model Oracle, as all professional road cyclists have been obliged to do since 5 May 2003 when a UCI rule was introduced.

Weylandt is the fourth rider to die during Giro d'Italia. The other fatally injured riders were Italians Orfeo Ponsin (1952) and Emilio Ravasio (1986) as well as Spaniard Juan Manuel Santisteban (1986).

Weylandt is survived by his girlfriend, Sophie, who is expecting the couple's first child in September.

Tributes: In tribute to Weylandt, the following day's stage of the race was cycled non-competitively, with teams taking turns to ride in front, and all riders wearing black armbands. Leopard Trek was allowed to cross the line first, along with Weylandt's best friend Tyler Farrar, riding for Garmin-Cervélo, who linked arms as they finished the race. Leopard Trek and Tyler Farrar subsequently withdrew from the race.
