WOW! Because of this super information technology highway (aka The Inter-Webs), a young, very talented lady photographer from Austria, contacted me and shared her experience she had with your Canon 30D which was very similar to mine. Of course after I replaced my shutter (see that work via video in my videos), and found the camera just as broken before the $50 spent on parts and 8+ hours on repair, I almost sold it for pennies on the dollar. But when Sabine Leidinger from Austria came along and share her story, along with detailed pictures of what she repaired on her 30D, I decided to take another look. Im glad I took another quick look; as it turns out my mirror mechanism wasnt exactly how Sabine described hers, but because I manually move the mechanism I must have re-tracked it and it now works again, plus I have a brand new shutter!

I know firsthand how difficult it is to tear this camera apart, so I have a lot of respect for the young gal from Austria that helped me. Thanks a million Sabine!

  • Huge thanks motleypixel. I got inspired by your movies and tried to solve the error99 prob with my canon 40D. Bought a new shutter on ebay and after a lot of work I have the same error 99 again! but now it's a little diferent. the camera actualy stores a file (black pic) and then errors. the shutter doesn't open even with manual sensor cleaning. Can you explain what you did there? could it be a lack of grease on the motors? thanks in advance.

  • @txugo1 Well, there's a mirror asymbly with connections and arms and it's best to access from the front of the camera...look in the 7 o-clock area of the lens mount. I detail with pictures on my website forum under "tutorials" there might be a knocked-off-track arm or something like that.

  • @motleypixel thanks for the fast reply. I went to your website but I cant find those examples under tutorials. can you give me a direct link?

  • @txugo1 didn't you email me? "Bruno?" anyway I was wrong, it's not under tutorials...it's under Equipment Central, top post about the 30D exploded diagram.

  • Hey, congratulations, very good job!!!

  • @sergiypitel Sorry I don't have any detailed instructions...just two detailed videos...did you watch the first video, it's where I show the complete disassembly of my 30D? You may want to check out my forums too...I've posted some other stuff there too.

    Customer Reviews:

There are probably many people out there who are thinking about buying this camera to upgrade. If you own a 10D then the choice is pretty easy, as you get extra MP plus new features. However, what if you own the XT, is this a worthwhile upgrade? The answer is that it depends if you need the new features. Based on my personal experience, ...

  • just to wrap this up. ITS FIXED! It seems the lower FPC from the sensor was disconnected so now it works! thanks a lot for your help.

  • doesn't the camera do some kind of cmos test to check that it's up and running? note that I can take a pic. and the exif info about the picture taken is stored and showed correctly but it's a complete black picture. I know that you already helped me enough with this and I thank you for that but I just wanted to have some direction to go to. if the FPC is ruined can I replace it with a new one or do I need to buy a new sensor? thanks.

  • @motleypixel Thanks again. It seems the 40D is a little different. So I couldn't replicate that. I hold the mirror and after a shot the shutter started working again but... all pics are black. The error 99 is gone but I have no image even when in live view mode. while soldering it heated the data cable that goes to the sensor. a protective tape had a dark mark but I think it managed to protect the FPC. but now I'm not so sure.if the fpc was destroyed somehow wouldn't I get an error of somekind?

  • Awesome!
