John, Great job on the video and information. What grit stones are you using on the grinder?

I have never seen a traditional grind done what I would consider backward. Using a platform, most turners would grind the right flute with the handle to the right and the left flute with the handle to the left. In other words, the cutting edge on the wing would start across the width of the grinding wheel. Your method would tend to hollow grind the length of the wing instead of hollow grind the cutting edge.

Very nicely done John. Too many folks make sharpening this long drawn out ordeal and totally over-analyze the process. You've made all of this look really simple, the way it should be.

I'm not sure how you see this as backward. It's almost exactly the way I learned to sharpen by hand, just more consistent. Maybe it's the angle of the photo. The grind lines go at a slight angle on the wings instead of straight down. The don't run sideways. I can't tell it makes any difference. I've ground tools at different angles in relation to the edge and can't tell any difference.
