Air Cannon Overview

This is a the basic air cannon I built a few years ago. It is a very simple model, this one in particular was the prototype, and consequently is the most reliable one I have ever built. It is made out of PVC pipe and uses a 3/4 inch solenoid sprinkler valve. The bottem chamber is pressurized using compressed air, and released as quickly as possible into the barrel, which has wadding and a projectile inserted.

That might have been a fuel powered potato gun. They work by spraying a fuel (usually hairspray) inside the chamber and igniting it using a BBQ igniter. This one uses compressed air, and three 9 volt batteries triggers a solenoid to open, letting the compressed air pass to the barrel and propel the potato! Hope that helps.

what electricity triggers the solenoid? i saw one the other day that looked like a barbeque pit igniter connected to the solenoid

its just using the natural solenoid and he uses an electric switch box to send a current to the solenoid opening the valve. This method causes a very slow release however about the same as a ball valve. Its best to mod a sprinkler valve with a blow gun or build a piston.
