Try using microphone arrays to amplify questions from the audience or they could talk into their smartphone and have that broadcast over the speaker system.
Having opened up itself to perception, the functions of the perceptual organs could be reasoned about. If the agent then modifies their function, it would be self-programming. A simple example would be a woman who re-engineers her own eye so that the optic nerve is on the side instead of in the back.
I, for one, do not perceive the actual image on my retina. This image is a whirling, flickering cacophony of patches of color. My conscious perception is instead a stable world made up of three-dimensional objects. But again, this is definitely not what is happening on the cells of my retina. Self-Programming then, would be an agent who opens up its own perceptual organs for examination. It would see its own retina with the flickering images, and it's "visual cortex", so to speak.
How surprising that a lecture series on "Self-Programming" should end up as a lengthy debate on the topic of Self-Awareness. Or this is not surprising, depending on who you are.
