How The Lion Kills

I've always wondered, How does a lion kill big game? When my grand daughter stepped in front of the lion exhibit at the Little Rock Zoo I discovered that it isn't with both front paws raking down at the same time. It is with first one paw then the other, swifter than a bolt of lightning.
Attacks like this are usually a sign of pressure. While it scares many grownups to think of the lion attacking a small child, the children themselves were simply amused. Emily got down and cried "Kitty, Kitty, Pretty Kitty." The other children were just taunting the cat.

Lions don't kill their prey by swiping at it. They kill their prey by suffocation. Their jaws close around the animals trachea and cut off its air supply till the animal suffocates. The claws are more a means for the lion to hold onto the prey till their jaws can find a grip.
