South Korea has conducted live-fire drills near a tense sea border with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. This is the first such exercise by the country since DPRK leader Kim Jong-Il's death.
South Korean officials say the marines, stationed on border islands of Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeong, have staged a routine two-hour drill.
A similar exercise in 2010, held jointly with the United States, provoked the DPRK to shell Yeonpyeong Island, killing four South Koreans. The incident prompted Seoul to increase its military presence on five front-line islands near the sea border.
The DPRK refuses to acknowledge the Yellow Sea border, called the Northern Limit Line, which was drawn by the US-led United Nations Command at the end of the Korean War.
