@MrShpiky His legs are not broken because he rolled and the landing material was sand instead of cement. Then you ask what's a roll got to do with it? Well, what a roll does is to give the center of mass more distance to decelerate when landing, and, therefore, reduce the rate of deceleration. A roll also distributes forces throughout the body so no part of the body is concentrated an amount of force beyond the body's breaking point.
