    The answer to this is simple.

    When the guy opens the envelope watch Derren carefully, he walks up to him and replaces the guys paper with his own. It's a brilliant piece of misdirection.

    Memorizing each tables chess moves and coming out the winner requires much more than average memory. Even if that statement of yours is true I don't really think many would care :( Derren has made an obscene level of money, if it's so "average" do it yourself.
