However, the circling around the church with colored umbrellas is not something we practice here in the Middle East, showing the meshing of Hindu traditional ritual, as does the lamp inside the church. The marriage "Tali" also is something unique to the Syriac Indians.
Thanks for posting! This video is informative, but i have a few comments:
When they refer to the similarities between Hindu and Syriac Christian Indian ways of worship they mention the "hand gestures" and the "bells."
The hand gestures are not related to the Hindu ones, because these hand gestures are also present in our Syriac Middle Eastern rituals. As for the bells, the ones in the Syriac tradition come from the Middle East and are not necessarily unique to India.
like it says in the video, i believe the syrian traditons and those immigrants came to kerala not so long ago. still there was a seperate people of ancient christians as nasranis which jewish converts and few brahimn families. thus we got mangalyasuthra, rahukalam, christian classical music, bowing down elders feet comes from hindu. nasranis used to observe sabbath, celebrating pessha. but later the portughese ruined all those then the middleastern orthodox traditions began to dominate.
@time4blue All the Orthodox people in different locations will look like the local population they're in. The Greek Orthodox will look like Greek people, Middle Eastern Orthodox will look like Middle Easterners, and Indian Orthodox will look like Indian people. So there were conversions and mixing with locals, that is why the Orthodox people look different. I'm an Indian Orthodox and my dad looks 100% Middle Eastern and I look kind of Middle Eastern. I guess some of those genes are strong.
@time4blue Syria was where the disciples were first called Christians. The Syrian Orthodox churches use the liturgy and rituals of Syria and use Syriac a dialect of Aramaic.
@time4blue Even in Syria, Middle East, and the Mediterranean, the first Christians converted by the disciples were Jews. They did convert locals as well because Jesus wouldn't deny them even if they were gentiles. All Orthodox people have Jewish origins. Aramaic was the language of the entire Middle East, so everyone including the Jews spoke the language. That is why we call ourselves Aramaic or Syrian Orthodox Christians.
@time4blue There were many Christian leaders that lead thousands of Christian immigrants from the Middle East to Kerala, India. That is why we are still in communion with the Church of the Middle East, we all have Aramaic ancestry. People don't realize that Orthodoxy comes from the disciples. The goal of the disciples was to spread the word of Jesus Christ and they went to all the locations where there were Jews. Their mission was to seek the house of Israel first and then the gentiles.
@time4blue Not necessarily Syria, but we had Christianity before the Aramaic Christians came. Our patriarch is St. Thomas the apostle, who brought Christianity to Kerala, India around A.D. 52. St. Thomas converted mostly Jews and some locals into Christians. Around the fourth century A.D. is when the Middle Eastern Christians first started to come. They fled the Middle East from religious persecution. The first Middle Eastern Christians did come from Syria.
