In Part 1, We see PICK 9500 & 9504 returning to Gluck Yard from switching the Owens Corning Plant. NOTE: Gluck is a few miles South of Anderson,SC.

Introduction:

Today (1/21/2008) I went back to my old home and chased the shortline that runs through town. It just so happens to be my favorite Shortline Railroad, Pickens Railroad. Watch the video and you'll see why!

Today's chase was REALLY crazy! The Pickens Railway is split by 2 jobs/lines. The Anderson Job/Line & Belton Job/Line. Well on Friday (1/18/2008) The Belton Job Flipped a rail on its return trip to Belton. Luckly no cars or locomotive hit the ground and Mr.Buck & Schimm were able to make it to Belton. The site was still a mess so the Belton Job couldn't run so today the Anderson Job had to make a SUPER RARE move by doing both jobs, seen in the 4 videos. These videos are dedicated to the Crews of Pickens Railway. Enjoy!

More info on the Pickens Railway:

Pickens Railway (AAR reporting marks PICK) is a Class III railroad operating on 2 separate divisions in the Upstate Region of South Carolina:

Easley to Pickens: 9.9 miles

Anderson, through Belton to Honea Path: 28.5 miles

Connections are made with the Norfolk Southern at Easley & Anderson and CSXT (via the Greenville and Western Railway) at Belton. Rail is 85-100 pounds on the Easley-Pickens segment and 85 pounds on the Anderson-Honea Path segment. Traffic includes transportation equipment, lumber, cotton, paper, fertilizer, & fiberglass.

When the Pickens expanded in the early 90s, it acquired a pair of ALCO S1s that was numbered 6 and 7. These were repowered with Caterpillar prime movers. As of 2007, one of the Alcos (#6), was still on the property, stored inoperable.

In 2000, the Pickens acquired a fleet of former CSX GE U18Bs numbered 9500-9508. Three (9501, 9503, 9507) are used for parts

  • I'll be going to Easley, SC soon. Do you know when the Pickens RR interchanges with NS?

  • ha good luck with that buddy, not only are you going to the wrong PICK Interchange, but NS Interchages with PICK in Downtown Anderson at around 11pm and if I were you I wouldn't be down in Anderson Yard at that time of night...White or Black!

  • Ok, lol. I haven't a clue what its like down there so thanks for the info! What do you mean by "the wrong interchange?"

  • There's two...the Easley one you're referring to is the Interchange to the line that goes North to Pickens to the Locomotive Rebuild shops. The Anderson Interchange with the 'actual' freight operations is at the end of the Z-Line that starts from Seneca, SC and Ends in Anderson.

  • Have you ever filmed the CSX coal train to Lee Steam Plant?

  • No, its almost pure luck to catch one running since they run so sporadically. The only neat thing about even filming on is seeing a 100 car coal train pound 80lbs. POS jointed rail. But, I've seen them before in Greenville & Greer. I also have pictures of the derailment of one in Duncan a few years ago.
