I played the game as soon as it came out. In the subsequent time to finish it (I obsessively finished it all night and morning long!
If it's any consolation, I figured out they were robots due to the fantastical feeling of the story.
The puzzle aren't broken by any means, they just simply are not compromising in their responses due to the strict solutions being the only viable end points.
