@untouchedking Then the players at the tournament you went to either weren't very good at Brawl or played Melee more often.
I'm part of a community of top Brawl players[though I, myself, am far from being a true expert at my chosen character], and I can tell you through battle experience that a match against a really good Brawl player isn't going to be a no-momentum tag match.
Sure, it will be less than Melee, due to the speed, but it's not going to be as bad as u make it sound.
-
@smashbrolink And don't try and deny that brawl plays like that, I went to a melee tourney where brawl was also being held and watched the matches. It was very campy-stall based gameplay. And when it wasnt campy it was them hitting eachother with no sort of momentum.
-
@smashbrolink By no means am i saying that getting out of combo's is easier than executing them, but at the same time melee's hitstun and air dodge system creates something that brawl doesn't have. Momentum. saying that melee's hitstun is helping you in the process would be the same as me saying Brawls LACK OF HITSTUN is helping you when you get hit. Brawl is like playing tag, and thats what melee players dont like about it. It's either hit and then get hit, or hit and then retreat to a ledge.
-
@untouchedking I never meant to imply that it was easy to learn these things. What I was trying to get at is that hit-stun is basically holding your hand throughout the process once you >have< learned them.
Lemme put this in another way that may get my point across better;
Try to imagine Melee's mechanics, with normal Brawl's hit-stun computations.
Now imagine trying to make 3/4ths of your combos land successfully without the opponent dodging or escaping.
They don't exactly mesh well.

@smashbrolink Listen man, I don't expect you to say that i'm right and come crawling to play melee. But I hate how brawl players have the idea of melee that every time you get a hit off its instant easy combo and everytime another character is offstage its instant death. Comboing in itself is actually very challenging. It requires a certain amount of tech skill sure, but above that it requires even more knowledge about the metagame as well as the other player, which is what makes melee amazing.
-
@smashbrolink That's one of the aspects that makes melee fun. It's a challenging game and there's no end to the feats which can be achieved. In addition to that the way you say it suggests that every character has some sort of 0 to death combo. Even chaingrabs are escapable via mindgames ect. Above that while escaping a combo is challenging, actually doing the combo itself can be just as challenging. Which is why you'll see even pro's often fail at escaping and comboing.
-
@smashbrolink Saying it's impossible is a ridiculous statement. There are numerous times where i've been able to react quick enough to di something really well and am able to get out of combos and/or survive. You'll see it alot in high level play as well where players are known to di really well or do amazing things in order to have longevity. Maybe it is next to impossible, but thats the great part. That there are next to impossible feats that can be achieved with a purpose.
-
@untouchedking There's a difference between hard but doable, and next-to-impossible.
Melee falls under the latter. If it did not, then many of the combos people say are totally escapable wouldn't even be happening. And on top of that, with limited options in terms of WHERE a victim can DI to in order to escape, a pro doesn't have to think very hard to predict what paths they could take and plan appropriate counter-measures, be they escaping or countering.
-
@untouchedking sorry i meant escape is hard. And If you don't know 4 frames is about 1/15th of a second, and as hard as that sounds its definitely possible, if the peach expects it she can ready her di so when it hits its not that hard.
2:29 omg hax. Marth's sword doesn't make the spike sound >_<

That's very true, that would be one of many great examples! But for my 2009 chronicles I'm just using stuff I've filmed since April 09 hehe. Nice to see you again! And I would encourage anyone to check out the video he's talking about: WrGyJU3YsGU starting around 2:50
