At least it looks authentic. It's quite sobering no? Keep in mind, a soldier in WW One remained until the end. Mind you, Canadian troops were in the war years ahead of the Americans. My Great Grandfather was a private for 2 1/2 yrs in WW One. How he (or anyone survived) is beyond me. The movie War Horse is also a very good movie.
Kinda wish my innocent interpretation of war was never changed due to movies like this. I liked when it was nothing but video-game violence to me, but I guess we all have to face reality sooner or later
@11strelokfan1000 - And even if a side did manage to break through a weak point in the defensive lines very often the advance could only be as fast as the army could march (there was no airtransport or truck transport for food and supplies so any breakthrough would capture in many cases only mere meters of ground) and the enemy would simply fall back to another line of defense.
@11strelokfan1000 In truth many generals chose there HQ only a few miles away from the front (compared to WW2 when many generals would not even be in the same country as there forces) but its fair to say there where good generals and bad generals but you have to understand there was literally no alternative to trench warfare at the time, there was no way to "Flank your enemy" when the trench systems used would stretch hundreds of miles from belgium to the south of france/switzerland-
@tuzza688 Maybe so, but we know every General was miles behind at the rear in some safe HQ fantasizing about victory. Some of them had been absolute Morons who didn't give an ounce of a thought what it was like, but constantly stated "The enemy will be crushed". And I believe there would be alternatives; For example, why charge Head-On? Soldiers could try encircling and flanking the enemy. That would definitely reduce casualties.
@11strelokfan1000 Of course the generals realised this, the image people seem to think about trench warfare in WW1 is that it was lions (soldiers) led by donkeys (generals), but the truth is the genrals tryed everthing possible to put an end to trench warfare but there was just no alternative at the time to fighting that way.
The fact that some of them were shot before they could even lift their feet out of the trench further proves that charging head-on is the worst battle tactic imaginable. A pity the generals never realised this...

@tuzza688 Too bad air strikes weren't an option either. Advancing to attack was suicide.
