Just to stick to the text and the music: this is a heart-wretching composition, all the more so because written by a man about a very human situation. "The delusion of the faithful is boundless" (Jerry 17:43).

You wouldn't talk about "wretched doctrine" in Christianity or anything else if you truly felt horrible about so betraying a friend to death, but of course those who condemn Christians/Christianity are so self-righteous that doesn't bother them as they ironically arrogantly condemn Christians for being arrogant, ironically being absolutely sure there's no absolute truth, as with Pilate when ironically He in Person (John 8:32-59) was standing right in front of him (John 18:38).
