  • what's the name of this tune?

  • It is called Loyd Loar. It was written by Bill Monroe and Named by Charlie Derrington.

  • Just curious as to where you learned the tune? I have a copy of the tune, but if there are others that exist of Monroe playing this tune, I would love to get a copy. Let me know if you can help in that area. Great Job!

  • I have a very poor recording of bill playing it on the grand ol opry, but i learned it from Skip Gorman's old style mandolin CD Part 2.

  • Great mandolin playing!

    What mandolin are you playing?

  • Lloyd Allayre Loar (January 9, 1886 – September 14, 1943)[1] was a Gibson sound engineer and master luthier in the early part of the 20th century. He is most famous for his F5 model mandolin, L5 guitar, H5 mandola, K5 mandocello, and A5 mandolin.

hate to be a stickler but to give him his proper respect..lets spell his name with two LL's the way it is supposed to be spelled..he deserves it if he can build a fine mandolin like that..Thanks LLOYD!

  • @healyholt

I second that. Definitely alot of similarities

  • @healyholt Agreed

  • sounds a lot like Big Mon

  • Sounds fantastic - You should post some more!

  • Next time we jam well work on it.

  • Maybe an apocryphal tale, but I think Bill wrote this on the spot when he went to Gibson to pick up the mandolin after Charlie Derrington repaired it after the 'Fire Poker' incident. There is a great picture of a smiling Bill Monroe playing #73987, Chet Atkins playing guitar and Charlie Derrington, in his shop apron, standing next to them.
