  • Wow, great history that you're sharing!

  • Most of the first wave of Chinese immigration came from South China because that was the region most exposed to the outside world. European traders were first directed there by the Emperor. Civil unrest and famine caused many Chinese to seek their fortunes outside of China in the late 19th Century.

  • @mjay22 China had some of its main exports through trade. It made its money through those sorts of ventures, naturally with ships leaving through ports..people would also. So,people living in the southern Chinese Provinces would naturally leave China through those circumstances. As for the Chinese in America, the USA has the largest amount of Chinese in any western nation..Europe included.

  • Regardless whether they'd be in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, America, Canada, Australia or any other country, It's funny noticing that most of the Chinese immigrants are from southern China. Why's that I wonder?

  • this is a primary source. this time was the discrimination between the Americans and Chinese during the gold rush times... a primary source!! excellent pictures.

  • cool !

  • Very cool!

  • most likely these are toisan children..since many of the first chinese to america(and canada) were from toisan(taishan), guangdong, china =D
