It's not really a theory. Sound is amplified by reflecting off of the inside surface of the cup much like sound is amplified in a concert hall. Basically you're loading a horn onto the headphones. Horns are used in speakers to amplify tweeters without adding additional power or having to attenuate the other drivers which boosts the speaker's overall efficiency. You hear not only the sound from the speaker itself, but also the reflected sounds which gives you the boost in volume.
