Relations between NATO and Russia will no longer be the same as before after the developments in Georgia - NATO Secretary General Jaap De Hoop Schaeffer announced at the news conference held after the ministerial of NATO member states in Brussels today.
The ministerial was mulling Georgia crisis and the resistance of Russia to keep the pledge and pullout its forces from the territories of Georgia beyond the conflict zones.
''I am not cancelling NATO -Russia council, however, this council will not work for some period. We are not closing all doors to Russia, but Russia must fulfill the conditions stipulated in the 6-point truce and pull out its forces from Georgia. Ties will not be the same as before, but the future relations will depend on how Russia fulfills its obligations,'' Schaeffer announced and added that Russia had to return its forces and positions to the 6 August status quo so that it did not threaten the territorial integrity of Georgia.
`We do not see signals of this happening,` Scheffer said. `There can be no business as usual with Russia under the present circumstances.`Schaeffer said.
The NATO Secretary General also voiced another decision made by the ministerial. He said, Georgia-NATO consultation commission would be formed, which would work on the further ties with Georgia and the alliance.
Schaeffer defined the commission would be similar to the one which the alliance had with Ukraine.
Schaeffer assessed the declaration adopted by the ministerial as fruitful and said foreign ministers of the NATO member states expressed their positions regarding the developments in Georgia.
The ministers reiterated support to Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty.
