The German chancellor Angela Merkel started her own video podcast over a month ago. The feedback she has gotten since isn't very positive. People claim it to be very staged and static and it's missing that personal touch that vlogs should have. Lyssa Bochert, a well known German blogger and soon-to-be chief editor at one of Germany's largest newspapers, and Gabe B. went to see the Chancellor last Wednesday to explain the essence of vlogging. The Chancellor was totally convinced and decided she wanted to do a spontanious interview right there in her office. Translation by Tobias Schwarz.

  • We absolutely love to hear from Angela Merkel. How can anyone refer to her as "awkward" - the woman is very comfortable in her own skin - and goes right to blogging. She has my admiration and respect.

  • I think she is the personification awkwardness, which definitely endears her to me. Also her evident obsession with her job... "vegetables instead of fruit" indeed!

  • kannst du ein link zu ihre vlogs schreiben?

  • Nice to see the human side of our politicians occasionally. (Actually, it's nice to see that our politicians even have a human side, but that's just me being cynical.)

But surely -- if I may split hairs -- the Chancellor is head of *government*, not head of state? The head of state in Germany is the President, currently Horst Köhler.

  • Personally I think it would be positive for politics in general, if people READ more about what polititians say and do, and WATCHED news less. This is because, while charisma helps the individual politician's career, it doesn't produce any quality politics. If we're into quality politics, style is not an issue.

  • wish she could give sarkozy and bush a few tips :(

  • In fact she's one of the best world leaders at the moment
