The Ambassador Theater was Washington, DC's psychedelic concert and dance hall, opened in 1967. It was a great honor to have organized a 40th anniversary reunion and panel discussion on November 3, 2007, and I thank everyone who participated in the event, as well as the research leading up to it.

The Ambassador Theater deserves a place in '60s cultural history alongside the Fillmores, Avalon Ballroom, Vulcan Gas Company, Grande Ballroom and others.
More information can be found at this wikipedia site, and a commemorative dvd is in production that will feature the whole program: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambassador_theater

  • I remember The James Cotton Blues Band too. They ripped the place up! The Youngbloods played there and Moby Grape were so damned good. Hendrix was fairly new as well. I only missed a couple of shows.

It was a brief bright comet of music. Those who passed through were blessed.

  • Love it! I saw Hendrix there in summer of 1967 - he played there 4 or 5 nights and the place was not even full the nights I went. I had to take a couple buses to get there from VA (I was 15) and one night I missed the last bus home (around midnight) and the DC police took me to the station and my dad had to pick me up. It was strange, especially since I was tripping at the time! I had a pot pipe in my boots which I hid under the seat in the cruiser - wonder if they ever found it? LOL!

  • I remember going to the Ambassador in '67 to see the James Cotton Blues Band (he's still touring in 2009!). He was a last-minute replacement for-- I think-- Paul Butterfield. We were brand-new freshmen in college wandering around a fairly tough DC neighborhood at night. Great times!

  • Thanks for helping preserve these important aspects of DC culture.

  • OMG That's my dad =D ( Mike Paper)
