Its great fuel, but it has too many drawbacks. "Clean coal" releases radionucleides into the atmospehere and heavy metals like DDT. Wheres the clean in that? And mountain top removal mining isnt "clean." But sure, we cant instantly do away with coal, but when that's our collective goal- to replace coal as fast as possible with a sustainable resource like wind and solar or whatever the next great invention is- thats a reasonable goal.
With energy demand continuing to go up, were going to need all of our available domestic energy resources to help meet that demand. That means that renewable energy has an important role to play in our energy portfolio.
However, in most cases renewables simply are not a suitable replacement for coal.
Technology is going to evolve, and coal is a unique bridge fuel that will take us to that next energy renaissance. As a matter of fact, coal may fuel the next energy renaissance.
Coal will be no means fuel the next 'energy renaissance'. Yes; wind, solar, hydro, or geothermal power can replace coal as of today, but in 20 to 30 years it will. If you do your research on 'clean coal' you will also find that no plant in the US is utilizing these clean coal technologies such as capturing and storing of CO2. The reason being is that its to expensive and they don't have the means yet. The energy revolution will be led by wind and solar, and coal will be left in the ashes.
I believe "Clean coal is like a healthy cigarette." Blan Holman. One large, coal-fired power plant generates the equivalent of 3 billion barrels of CO2 (liquefied)over a 60-year lifetime. That would require a space the size of a major oil field to contain. (from BusinessWeek, Jun 30, 08) Carbon sequestration--what a joke!
We're 100% committed to talking about technologies that could some day make coal a truly environmentally friendly source of energy. That's why we love to use the phrase "clean coal," even though we'd like to spend the next, oh, 20 or 30 years building new power plants the old dirty way. But you've got to admit -- if we say "clean coal" often enough, it sounds like we're doing it already! CLEAN COAL!
